This Women’s History Month, we are honored to recognize a true champion of Women in Jazz, award-winning drummer and band leader, Sherrie Maricle. The leader of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra (DIVA) and Five Play, Sherrie Maricle, is not only recognized as an internationally renowned jazz musician but also as a powerful advocate for women in a field that has historically been male dominated.

We are thrilled to have acclaimed saxophonist Joshua Redman kicking off JAZZ ROOM Season 19… Here are a few highlights from Joshua’s conversation with our own Curtis Davenport.

Emmet Cohen has been a recognized powerhouse of music. In the midst of touring, he continues the online “Live at Emmet’s Place” series, and keeps jazz education at the forefront. We caught up with Emmet before the JAZZ ROOM to get a more personal sense of his inspirations and motivations.

Jazz has been entwined with Latin music since its very beginning—in fact, jazz scholar Christopher Washburne argues that the birth of jazz happened synchronously with the birth of Latin jazz.

While the resonances of Cuban rhythms can be heard from the beginning of jazz history, most historians recognize the relationships among trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, percussionist Chano Pozo and trumpeter and bandleader Mario Bauzá as what introduced mainstream jazz players and audiences to Afro-Cuban jazz.
