JazzArts Charlotte welcomes back our very own Luther S. Allison for a jazz educational workshop. As a way to deepen the interaction of our national jazz performing artists with the local music community, JazzArts Charlotte welcomes student musicians from the Charlotte area and beyond to learn from this world-renowned jazz innovator.

Luther S. Allison is a Charlotte-born pianist, drummer, composer, and educator recognized for his blues-based, gospel-inspired approach rooted in bebop and soul. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University, he has toured internationally with artists including Samara Joy, Jazzmeia Horn, Rodney Whitaker, and The Baylor Project. His debut album I Owe It All To You on Posi-Tone Records earned 4.5 stars from Downbeat, which praised his artistry as “a pianist who seems to have no weak points.” Allison has performed at premier venues and festivals worldwide, composed for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at Wynton Marsalis’ commission, and is a proud Yamaha artist.

This applied workshop is open to middle and high school-aged musicians, with at least one year of experience on their instrument. All instruments are welcome – you are invited to bring it along.

FREE. Registration required.

Thank you to the program sponsors and supporters, who each bring jazz alive in Charlotte: Infusion Fund, Knight Foundation, Doris Duke Foundation, North Carolina Arts Council, Arts & Science Council and O’s Place Jazz.
