Youth Jazz Workshop

Spring 2021

Thursdays 5:00-6:30pm ET, 12-week session, Feb 11 – Apr 29
Online classes

This is a 12-week online applied program offered to students in grades 7-12 who want to continue improving their individual skills within the context of an interactive jazz workshop. The 90-minute weekly sessions provide students the opportunity to grow their individual skills within a supportive and relaxed workshop environment, with a concentration on exploring jazz improvisation, styles, standard repertoire, theory, and history. There are two sessions for this class (Tues or Thurs) taught by Lovell Bradford and Sean Higgins. Students are placed in session that best fits their skill level.

Pre-requisites for this workshop:

  • Students with at least two years of musical experience.  A basic proficiency with your instrument, and understanding of chords and theory, would be beneficial.
  • No audition required.  A note from a music instructor indicating level of music experience would be beneficial.
  • Students are not expected to have prior experience with jazz.

Requirements:

  • Instrument (woodwind, brass, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass, string) in working condition
  • Access to reliable wireless internet or ethernet connection
  • Reliable computer for class on Zoom.us; this could be a webcam, laptop with webcam, smartphone with camera, iPad, Tablet, etc
  • Backing tracks with the iRealPro app or others to be determined
  • A working email address. Students will be emailed PDF’s of the examples covered in the course.
  • Pencil and paper (for notes); you can also use your device.
