Jazz Fundamentals Workshops I & II

Fundamentals I with Lovell Bradford:  Wednesdays 6:30-7:45pm ET, 6-week session, Feb 10 – Mar 17
Fundamentals II with Sean Higgins:  Tuesdays 6:30-7:45pm ET, 6-week session, Feb 9 – Mar 16

This 6-week online workshop is perfect for adults with some instrumental experience who want to learn the fundamentals of jazz or improve their jazz skills, and jazz genres,  Some class lessons will include :jazz standards, how to practice jazz, chord/scale relationships, ear training, music theory, melodies/phrasing, and active listening.  This class is designed to help participants further increase musical competency and creativity in an applied jazz context.

Pre-requisites for this workshop:

  • Adults, 18 years and older
  • Can play at least three major scales (I)  or six major scales (II).
  • Participants for Fundamentals I are not expected to have prior experience with jazz.

Requirements:

  • Instrument (woodwind, brass, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass, string) in working condition
  • Access to reliable wireless internet or ethernet connection
  • Reliable computer for a class on Zoom.us; this could be a webcam, laptop with webcam, smartphone with camera, iPad, Tablet, etc
  • Backing tracks with the iRealPro app or others to be determined
  • A working email address. Students will be emailed PDF’s of the examples covered in the course.
  • Pencil and paper (for notes); you can also use your device.

Instructor Bios: 
Adjunct professor of piano at Davidson College where he also studied Music and Art, Lovell Bradford is well known artist, performing on a number of top recordings in both the Gospel and Jazz traditions. Bradford is a native of Gary Indiana. His first musical influences were in church where his first teacher, his grandmother, played every Sunday. His gifts grew and took him to Central State University where he would broaden his musical sphere of influences. He began playing in the jazz scene of Columbus, OH before moving to Charlotte, NC. Lovell has performed with artists such as Pharez Whitted, Slide Hampton, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Ronnie Burrage, and many others.

Pianist, composer, and educator, Sean Higgins is an international touring and recording artist acting as a musical ambassador to audiences worldwide. While classically trained, his own group offers a modern take on the jazz trio configuration. He has played in many NYC clubs such as The Jazz Standard, Smoke, Dizzy’s-Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Lenox Lounge. Sean was a member of the Winard Harper Sextet for 2 years and has shared the stage with Antonio Hart, Charles McPherson, Bobby Watson, John Clayton, Russell Malone, and many others. Higgins enjoys exploring many musical genres and has played keyboards in many commercial settings such as R&B, pop, and fusion. Higgins completed a Bachelors in Jazz Performance at UNC-Wilmington, and a Masters at Northern Illinois University.

 

Registration & Tuition

Registration for Fundamentals I and Fundamentals II is open now through January 22.  Space is limited.  No auditions required.

$250 for the full session (includes $15 non-refundable registration fee)

Payment and Refund Policy

Tuition is due at the time of registration. Full payment may be made by credit/debit card check or money order. A full refund will be granted up to one week before the first program day – minus a $15.00 registration fee.
