Formally the David F. Barcomb, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, this fund began as a generous donation in honor of the life of a passionate musician and family.
The Barcomb Scholarship is targeted as need-based financial aid to ensure Jazz Arts Charlotte educational programs are accessible to all students.
The history of American Jazz, and its greatest icons, is the history of breaking down barriers of ethnic and social equality. This scholarship continues that legacy.
A shared love of music created a special bond between the late David F. Barcomb, Jr. and his grandson.
Music was woven throughout the fabric of Dave’s life. As a child, he took piano lessons, and as a teen added trumpet to his repertoire. In high school, he and his bandmates played for various community events in and around Keen, N.H. Later, he helped put himself through the University of New Hampshire by working at the school radio station and playing gigs around the state with his own band. Music continued to be a big part of Dave’s life until his passing.
Few things made Dave more proud than watching his grandson follow in his footsteps and share his appreciation for jazz. In his final days, Dave enjoyed listening and watching several performances from JazzArts Camp concert. He was in awe of how the young musicians, some with only a year or two of playing experience, were able to perform so well and confidently together in just five days!
Dave was always grateful his parents had the ability to financially support his musical interest. In celebration of Dave’s life and love of music, his family has made a donation to provide five-year-long JazzArts Charlotte scholarships for students in need of financial assistance. They hope this donation will inspire others who share Dave’s love of music to make a contribution, of any amount, to help provide more students access to the wonderful world of jazz! Your donation to this Scholarship Fund will help provide young musicians in financial need with access to JazzArts Charlotte’s Academy and summer camp programs.
