As a way to deepen the interaction of our national jazz performing artists with the local music community\, JazzArts Charlotte welcomes student musicians from the Charlotte area and beyond to learn from this world-renowned jazz innovator. \nThis applied workshop is open to middle and high school-aged musicians\, with at least one year of experience on their instrument. All instruments are welcome – you are invited to bring it along. \nFREE. Registration required. \nAs an accomplished composer\, esteemed saxophonist\, vocalist\, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition\, she is quickly becoming one of the leading standard bearers of the art form. Her distinct musical approach to classic and original repertoire\, which highlights her craft as a powerhouse singer and instrumentalist\, is a captivating blend of tradition and innovation. After receiving his first saxophone at age 4 from Kenny G during a concert in Virginia\, Adrian has gone on to become “one of his generation’s most prolific and successful professional musicians.” Having worked with a range of artists including Branford Marsalis\, Lionel Richie\, Ceelo Green and Bette Midler\, Adrian toured and recorded with Prince and the New Power Generation as the leader of the band’s 11-piece horn section from 2012-2016. \nKnown as one of the most influential saxophonists of his time\, Grover Washington Jr. was a trail blazer in his field. First influenced by his father who also played the sax\, Washington was performing in the New York club scene by age 12. Within his career\, Grover was recorded on hits such as “Inner City Blues” and “Just the Two of Us” and with labels ranging from Motown Records to Columbia Records. DESCRIPTION:Chief Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott)\nJanuary 17th and 18th. \n(Modern Jazz)\n“…Trumpet virtuoso who’s stretching modern jazz music to include flavors of hip-hop\, trap and West African percussion”\, Chief Adjuah (Christian Scott)\, returns to kick off the new year with his dynamic quintet at the JAZZ ROOM. \nChief Xian aTunde Adjuah (Christian Scott)\, is a two-time Edison Award winning and five-time Grammy Award nominated musician\, composer and producer. He is the nephew of jazz innovator and legendary sax man\, Donald Harrison\, Jr. His musical tutelage began under the direction of his uncle at the age of thirteen. After graduating from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) in 2001\, Adjuah received a full tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music where he earned a degree in Professional Music and Film Scoring thirty months later. \nSince 2002\, Adjuah has released twelve critically acclaimed studio recordings\, three live albums and one greatest hits collection. According to NPR\, Adjuah “ushers in new era of jazz”. He has been heralded by JazzTimes Magazine as “Jazz’s young style God.” Adjuah is known for developing the harmonic convention known as the “forecasting cell” and for his use of an un-voiced tone in his playing\, emphasizing breath over vibration at the mouthpiece. He is the nephew of jazz innovator and legendary sax man\, Donald Harrison\, Jr. His musical tutelage began under the direction of his uncle at the age of thirteen. After graduating from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) in 2001\, Adjuah received a full tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music where he earned a degree in Professional Music and Film Scoring thirty months later. \nSince 2002\, Adjuah has released twelve critically acclaimed studio recordings\, three live albums and one greatest hits collection. According to NPR\, Adjuah “ushers in new era of jazz”. DESCRIPTION:Sasha Masakowski sings Antonio Carlos Jobim\nOctober 18th and 19th \n(Bossa Nova Jazz\, Vocals)\nSeason 21 kicks off with the return of a JAZZ ROOM favorite. Renowned vocalist Sasha Masakowski\, and her 6-piece young virtuosic jazz ensemble performs a tribute to Bossa Nova legend\, Antonio Carlos Jobim and the music of Brazil. \nSasha Masakowski\, daughter of luminary jazz guitarist Steve Masakowski\, was born and raised in New Orleans. She was listed as one of 12 jazz artists to watch in 2019 by Paste Magazine\, and has received accolades from Vanity Fair\, Downbeat\, and Jazz Times. Since 2018\, Sasha has performed as a bandleader at Cotton Club Tokyo\, Blue Note (NYC)\, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai\, Jazz Standard (NYC)\, Detroit Jazz Festival\, SF Jazz Center\, Copenhagen Jazz Festival\, Bird’s Basement (Melbourne) and San Jose Jazz Festival\, among others. She has released several albums under her name\, as well as her electro-pop monikers Hildegard and Tra$h Magnolia\, where she composes\, produces\, and plays many instruments to craft her intricate\, original music. \nIn 2021 Sasha produced an album for renowned Thai singer\, Rasmee\, and two songs hit the top 10 charts in Thailand. She frequently returns to Southeast Asia to tour with Rasmee\, produce for other Thai pop and hip-hop artists\, and eat lots of food. Since 2020\, Sasha has worked extensively with Nicholas Payton\, recording and touring with his project “New World Order.” During the pandemic\, Sasha and Nick had a weekly duo concert\, live-streamed via Blue Note NYC. Last year they performed as a duo at the Blue Note Napa festival\, curated by Robert Glasper and Dave Chapelle. \nAntônio Carlos Jobim \nBrazilian songwriter\, composer\, arranger\, singer\, and pianist/guitarist Antônio “Tom” Carlos Jobim is considered to be one of the most important songwriters of the 20th century\, sometimes referred to as the George Gershwin of Brazil. A key event in making Jobim’s music known in the English-speaking world was his collaboration with the American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz and João Gilberto\, which resulted in “Getz/Gilberto” (1963) The release of Getz/Gilberto created a bossa nova craze in the United States\, and subsequently internationally. Pedrito Martinez was born in Havana\, Cuba\, Sept 12\, 1973. He began his musical career at the age of 11\, performing as vocalist and percussionist playing with such Cuban legends as Tata Guines\, Munequitos de Matanzas. In 1998\, he was brought to Canada by Jane Bunnett to tour with her group\, Spirits of Havana. His decision to r ain in North America to pursue his career proved to be an auspicious one when\, two years later\, the annual Thelonious Monk Institute Competition showcased Afro-Latin Hand Drumming for the first time ever; he entered and won first place. Martinez was a member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena with which he recorded two albums and toured the world opening for bands including the Dave Matthews Band\, Willie Nelson\, and Ray Charles. In addition\, he has also lent his talents to more than one hundred records\, and collaborated with artist such as Paquito D’Rivera\, Issac Delgado\, Eliane Elias\, Stefon Harris\, Steve Turre\, Eddie Palmieri\, Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, Conrad Herwig\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, Bill Summers and Los Hombres Calientes. \nThe JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar\, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. \nThank you to our JAZZ ROOM contributors: Bank of America\, South Arts\, Knight Foundation\, Arts & Science Council\, North Carolina Arts Council\, Alice L Walton Foundation\, Ford Foundation\, and the Infusion Fund.
