SUMMARY:Women In Jazz: FIVE PLAY featuring Sherrie Maricle
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Women’s History Month\, the JAZZ ROOM welcomes renowned drummer and bandleader\, Sherrie Maricle and FIVE PLAY. This quintet is comprised of members from the world-famous Jazz DIVA Orchestra rhythm section with two of its foremost soloists. This collective is rooted in the jazz tradition with a “creative vision to swing through the twenty-first century”. \nSherrie Maricle thrives on breaking the stereotypes of “The Girls in Band.” From the drum set\, Sherrie leads The DIVA Jazz Orchestra\, her quintet FIVE PLAY and co-leads the 3D Jazz Trio. She is also a sought-after freelance performer\, a published composer/arranger and a dedicated educator\, clinician\, guest conductor and soloist. They exude the excitement and force of historic big bands combined with an eye toward today’s progressive sounds of originality and verve.\nSherrie has performed at many of the world’s most acclaimed music venues\, from Lincoln Center to the Hollywood Bowl and Jazz festivals around the world. Additionally\, Sherrie and DIVA were featured at the 2017 NEA Jazz Masters’ Awards Ceremony\, the soundtrack for the NBC-Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular; on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood\, on TCM’s televised broadcast of the 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center and NHK Japan’s New York Jazz. The band also co-stars in the award-winning documentary film The Girls in the Band.\nAs an educator\, Sherrie runs a private drum set and percussion studio. She is a clinician for Yamaha Drums\, Sabian Cymbals\, Aquarian Drumheads and Vic Firth Drumsticks. Sherrie created\, and remains the Music Director for Musical Magic\, a hospital outreach program for The Ronald McDonald House – New York. She is currently on the faculty of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. \nMeet Five Play: \nSherrie Maricle\, Drums. \nLaura Dreyer\, Saxophone. \nTomoko Ohno\, Piano. \nKellin Hanas\, Trumpet. \nNoriko Ueda\, Bass. \nThe JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar\, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. \nThank you to our JAZZ ROOM contributors: Bank of America\, South Arts\, Knight Foundation\, Arts & Science Council\, North Carolina Arts Council\, Alice L Walton Foundation\, Ford Foundation\, and the Infusion Fund.
