SUMMARY:JAZZ ROOM presents: RAVI COLTRANE: Featuring Gadi Lehavi and Ele Howell
DESCRIPTION:RAVI COLTRANE: Featuring Gadi Lehavi and Ele Howell – June 14-15 \n“A worthy heir to his father\, jazz legend John Coltrane” ~ The Telegraph \nRavi Coltrane is a critically acclaimed\, Grammy-nominated saxophonist\, bandleader\, and composer. In the course of a twenty-plus-year career\, Mr. Coltrane has worked as a sideman to many and recorded noteworthy albums for himself and others. Coltrane makes his Charlotte debut\, performing his original compositions with his cutting-edge trio in a rare JAZZ ROOM appearance. \nAn artist whose career occupies a singular niche in modern jazz\, Ravi Coltrane has established a sound and concepts that stand undeniably on their own\, extending far beyond the shadow of his iconic name. Early experience in John Coltrane Quartet drummer Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine and maverick saxophonist Steve Coleman’s M-Base movement helped build Coltrane’s expansive aesthetic\, leading to a procession of increasingly audacious recordings as a leader and collaboration with artists ranging from his mother\, harpist and pianist Alice Coltrane\, and cousin\, iconoclastic producer Flying Lotus\, to pianist Chick Corea\, trumpeter Terence Blanchard\, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. \nBorn in Long Island\, the second son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane\, Ravi was named after Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar. He was raised in Los Angeles where his family moved after his father’s death in 1967. His mother\, Alice Coltrane\, was a significant influence on Ravi and it was he who encouraged Alice to return to performance and the recording studio after a long absence. Subsequently\, Ravi produced and played on Alice Coltrane’s powerful Translinear Light\, which was released in 2004. \nRavi lives in Brooklyn\, NY\, and maintains a fast-paced touring\, recording\, composing and performance schedule. He leads the effort to restore the John Coltrane Home in Dix Hills\, Long Island www.thecoltranehome.org and presides over important reissues of his parents’ recordings. \nThe JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar\, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. \nThank you to our JAZZ ROOM contributors: Bank of America\, South Arts\, Knight Foundation\, Arts & Science Council\, North Carolina Arts Council\, Alice L Walton Foundation\, Ford Foundation\, and the Infusion Fund.
