DESCRIPTION:2022 NEA Jazz Master\, New Orleans cultural torchbearer\, and saxophonist Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. joins the JAZZ ROOM to perform his hard-swinging improvisational style and his original creation\, “Nouveau Swing\,” a blend of jazz with R&B\, hip-hop\, rock\, and soul. JazzArts welcomes Big Chief Donald and his quintet from the Crescent City celebrating the kickoff to JAZZ ROOM Season 16 and Jazz Appreciation Month. \nFEATURING:\nDonald Harrison Jr\, saxophone\nBrian Richburg Jr\, drummer\nNoriatsu Naraoka\, bass\nDan Kaufman\, piano\nDetroit Brooks\, guitar \nDonald Harrison Jr.: is considered master of every era of jazz\, soul\, funk\, and classical music. \n“A Genius. ”  – Eddie Palmieri. \nDonald Harrison Jr has created three influential styles of jazz: nouveau swing\, a modern second-line\, and quantum jazz.  Take a listen to a few of his albums that highlight those styles:  2010 album Quantum Leap.  1997 album Neaveau Swing. \nIn the HBO drama\, “Treme”\, Emmy-winning director David Simon created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music. The show is loosely based on Harrison’s life and he actually plays himself in many episodes. \nDonald Harrison Jr. is a 2022 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters Fellowship\, the highest honor that our nation bestows on jazz artists. This award recognizes living legends who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz. You may recognize Donald Harrison as one of The Notorious B.I.G.’s mentors from the Netflix documentary “Biggie: I got a Story to Tell”. \nJazzArts Charlotte has a long history with Jazz Master Donald Harrison Jr. Artistic Director and drummer Ocie Davis toured with Donald Harrison Jr back in the early 2000s\, before Hurricane Katrina brought the Davis’s here to Charlotte.
