JazzArts Charlotte is excited to bring Charlotte this highly acclaimed national jazz program for preschoolers.
Children and their parents or caregivers sing, move and play with the soulful rhythms and melodies of great jazz. These classes are produced in collaboration with the Teachers College at Columbia University and have been offered for 15 years through Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The WeBop teachers will lead children to a greater understanding of music, their national musical heritage, and ultimately, themselves.
WeBop offers two class levels: Stompers (ages 2-3 years) and Gumbo (ages 3-5 years). The curriculum is customized to build on the developmental strengths of the students.
Stompers (ages 2-3) Saturdays, 9-9:45am
These students will become familiar with a rich repertoire of jazz music through the improvisatory spirit of jazz – singing, dancing and playing small percussion instruments with recordings and creating their own jazz-y renditions of familiar tunes and rhymes. Children will also become characters in musical stories, interact with others in call and response singing, and of course, stomping.
Gumbo Group (3-5 year olds) Saturdays, 10:30-11:15am
These students will experience jazz in a number of ways: through movement, musical instruments, and their voices. Activities are designed to require a range of skills from accompanying recordings with shakers, to identifying iconic images (lines, shapes, colors) of a musical “score” representing sound. Adults in each of the classes will interact with the children in various roles (audience, duo-performer, “sideman”) and reinforce activities from class at home with specially designed materials.
