JazzArts Music Camp 2012

 

Study JAZZ with international music educator Jamey Aebersold at the 2012 JazzArts Music Camp!

For over 40 years, musicians have turned to Jamey Aebersold ‘s Jazz Play-A-Long Books, CDs, and workshops to learn and expand their improvisational skills.

The JazzArts Music Camp is an exciting one-week comprehensive music training program for students, grades 7-12, devoted to America's original art form:  JAZZ.  Students will be immersed in an intensive jazz curriculum and have the opportunity to interact and play with other motivated young musicians from the Charlotte area. This jazz camp offers instruction from the region’s leading professional jazz educators and internationally recognized performers including a 2010 Grammy Award-winner.

World renowned music educator, Jamey Aebersold, will serve as the 2012 JazzArts Music Camp Guest Clinician.

The JazzArts Music Camp curriculum includes: small combo performance, jazz improvisation, faculty concerts (each afternoon), jazz history and listening, jazz theory (basic to advanced), composition, master class instruction on bass, drums, guitar, piano, saxophone (all woodwinds), trombone and trumpet, and student jam sessions.  A renowned jazz guest artist will join camp participants in a public concert performance at the end of camp. (Parents are encouraged to attend).

* Placement level auditions will be held prior to camp.  At least one year of band or private music lesson experience is required to participate.

Audition Requirements (melodic and harmonic instruments):
  • Improvisation on the 12-bar Blues in the key of F
  • Scales: 3 major, 3 minor (2 octaves)
  • Play the melody of  Billies Bouce by Charlie Parker (below)
  • Sight Reading Sight Reading 

Audition Requirements (drums):

  • Perform swing pattern on 12-bar Blues
  • Play the following styles: Latin (bossa nova, samba,), funk, pop and rock oriented grooves
  • Solo on 12-bar blues form
  • Sight Reading
Audition Requirements (Bass):
  • Perform a bass-line (walk bass-line) on the 12-bar Blues in the key of F
  • Play scales listed on the requirements on website 
  • iSght reading
  • Any additional piece you would like to perform

In September, as a part of the Annual Festival in the Park, the Jazz Arts Initiative will present the JazzArts Music Stage. This event will offer opportunities for local performing groups from middle schools, high schools and colleges, as well as professional artists, to showcase their skills.  Audiences will explore their cultural heritage and will mingle with performers who have discovered their passion for music and the diversity of the jazz arts.

 The JazzArts Music Stage Description

  • The goal is to provide an opportunity for local and regional musicians, other jazz-related performing artists, and audiences to share in the celebration of community through jazz. 
  • It is an opportunity to learn about the contributions of Charlotte and NC Jazz musicians through its Heritage Jazz Performances and Presentations. 
  • Although focused on musical performance, the Jazz Arts Stage will also feature artists who gain inspiration from the music and its participants. 
  • The Stage will showcase local and regional musicians as well as offer opportunities for Jazz education and exploration for young people and adults.
  • The Stage will showcase both professional and amateur performers.
  • The Stage will reflect the diversity of ethnicities, races, ages, and genders of jazz performers in this region.
